Super rough demo to a song I wrote yesterday. If you like it, tell a friend.
lyrics: I once had these delusions/there were monsters all around me/I never did sleep so soundly til I met you/then the weight of the world put pressure on my eyelids/when I woke up, I was blinded/you stood there by the doorway and reminded me to hold on hold on hold on/I do, you do, we do/What’s done is done , it’s done/now I can carry you::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I once dreamt you were dying/when I woke up, you were flying/Thank God you were beside me/not in hiding from the plagues of my hurt that comes and then passes over/paint the door red/getting closer/we ran down to the Red Sea, parted wildly/ hold on hold on hold on/I do, you do, we do/What’s done is done , it’s done/now I can carry you
- foxfur
Feeling a little stressed over this project I’m editing now (and future stress for the ones I’ve agreed to do in the near future), so I’m taking a quick break. This is a rough demo of one of my favorite songs by John-Flor Sisante. It’s so beautiful and calming. Follow him and listen to his other music. It’s good for the soul. :)

YUM. Try out this delicious recipe from Whole Living!
I made this last night and loved it. As soon as I got home, I tossed the beets in the oven since they take awhile and I was already super hungry. But an hour later I had tender beets cooling on the stovetop as I was preparing the other ingredients. (TIP: Whole Living suggests to rub off the beet skins with a paper towel… it works really well! Just wait until they’ve cooled!) The oranges take awhile to prepare, so keep that in mind as well. I do suggest going all the way with peeling for these… taking the membranes off make a difference!
I don’t have a blender (I will soon), so I had to improvise a little by leaving out the beet. :( Next time, though, because I’m sure it makes the vinaigrette that much better.
Anyway, the salad turned out delicious and I’ll be sure to make it again soon!
Happy eating :)

Check out: Well and Good NYC
Just stumbled across this amazing blog, Well and Good NYC. Great articles on exercise, healthy eating, and more… I think I’ve found a new obsession!
Click the photo below to read an article about a former teacher of mine. And if you’re in NYC this weekend, take his class! …..

Shiver me timbers!
Good morning!
It’s painfully cold today and I made the mistake of wearing CROPPED yoga pants to 6:15AM Vinyasa class. A very big no-no that I will never do again. My legs are still a bit tingly where the skin was exposed and I suspect that I could have damaged it if I had to walk farther than 8 blocks to the gym! Regardless, 6:15AM yoga class only came about because I woke up at 5:00AM and couldn’t get back to sleep. But it was a great class with a very kind and amusing instructor. Might try to make it next week!
I was at the gym last night too, as promised.
- 20 minutes on cycling bike (endurance mode and medium resistance)
- lower back extensions
- ab twists and crunches
- leg lifts, focusing on strengthening the muscles around my knees
- glut press (caught some dude with his mouth open. wearing a shirt that covers my gluts next time!)
- inner thigh press
- back press (okay, not what it’s called but it’s a machine where you pull weight bringing your arms from an extending position to a bent position by your sides.)
- 6 minutes on the rowing machine
Then came food shopping (a work out too!) and cooking that new recipe (roasted peppers, cauliflower, and almonds). After dinner I did some stretching and then an inverted position (lying on the floor with your legs straight against a wall) while catching up on Once Upon a Time.
I’m not all that tired… but I probably will be later!
Another healthy recipe tonight followed by a good night’s rest. :)

Roasted peppers, cauliflower, and almonds. (recipe below!)
Pretty tasty! But be careful with the lemon dressing. Too much will overpower the veggies.

HNY!
To all three of my readers, Happy New Year!
As part of my main resolution for 2012, I want to keep up with my fitness plan (minus the trainer for the time being) PLUS work on my skills in the kitchen. That’s right. I’ll now be blogging (and maybe vlogging) healthy recipes!
I’m sort of obsessed with the magazine Whole Living… it’s a great resource and probably the only magazine I read religiously. (I actually have a legitimate subscription to it, so you know it’s serious.) But over vacation, I really got back into the fit mindset while staying with my cousin, Larkin, and his wife, Vanessa, who is a personal trainer. She’s all about healthy eating and keeping fit, and has inspired me to keep going with this blog. (And if you’re in the Richmond/Lexington, Kentucky area, you should totally workout with her at DR Fitness!)
But I’m off to a great start!
Yesterday I started (and almost finished) a complete clean-sweep of my apartment. A clean living space makes for a clean mind! I tossed things I never use or things that have expired… I hung up newly purchased artwork from Berea, Kentucky… and I rearranged furniture to maximize space. It’s looking great and it feels more like home.
And today I started my resolution to eat healthier things… at least, at lunch. I’m usually a bagel person but that’s just unnecessary carbs. So I’ll have to figure something else out for breakfast. But for lunch I had a chicken salad sandwich (organic chicken, fresh tarragon, and organic greens) and a Naked Juice Smoothie. The great thing about Naked (it’s a brand, quit your giggling) is that it’s 100% juice and includes essential vitamins. I had Red Machine, which is raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, pomegranates, oranges, grapes, and banana, and has flax seed, omega-3 (which I need and will explain later), vitamins B6/B12/C, potassium, and fiber. It’s very tasty and you should drink it. :)
Plan for tonight: off to the gym right from work (for a good, all-over workout), food store (with my list of healthy items), and then trying out a new recipe (probably the Roasted Peppers/Cauliflower/Almond recipe from Whole Living).
I’m really serious about this resolution of staying healthy. I have chronic inflammation in the muscles around my chest, which is sort of like asthma. There’s this constant feeling of an elephant on my chest, some days more than others, and a terrifying feeling of being unable to catch my breath. The worst part is that it’s not asthma, which usually responds to inhalers/nebulizers. For my problem, the only advice is to stick to foods/herbs/vitamins with anti-inflammatory properties and to do exercises that help posture/breathing such as yoga.
So here are my focuses (or goals, I guess)….
- staying away from “inflaming” foods (bananas, breads, etc)
- eating “non-infaming foods/spices (ginger, paprika, etc)
- attending yoga regularly
- meditating
- deep breathing and stretching
- keeping stress to a minimum
Sound good? What are your goals for the new year?

23 + 1 continued…

That was last night’s get-up. Still arguing that my shirt lost major length because of my… top. Haha. Whatever, I liked it. The bottom half is a black skirt, black tights, and black heeled booties. (I just giggled. So mature.)
Anyyyywayyyy, down to business. Just got home from my session:
- We were both late so we skipped the rowing machine!
- Standing rowing machine: squats & rowing during the first half (20 seconds), and just standing/rowing for the second half.
- Circuit: Modified leg lifts (knees up to chest) on the “chair,” plank held on a medicine ball (fell once!).
- Gluts! Machine where you’re belly-down, one knee on a pad and the other leg pushes back & up to work the booty.
- Circuit: Lateral pull-downs, triceps/biceps with weights (bent over, knee up on the bench, bringing the weight up to your chest like “muscle beach” lol).
- Circuit: Leg extension machine, outer thigh leg lifts
- Rowing machine, 6 minutes
- Circuit: Straight-back bar lift (1 set from bent over to standing straight, 2 sets: start bent over, bring bar up/in to chest, lower bar, stand up straight), weights lifted from shoulders to above head.
- Stretching!
Much better work out than the last session. We were both sick last time so it was sort of “give me what you can.” But I can feel my muscles pulsing right now, especially my biceps and abs. Good stuff!
One more session on Saturday and then we’re done. :( But never fear! I’ll still blog about my work outs.

23 (+1)
Yesterday was my 23rd birthday and I was very much alive & kicking for it. :) It was a relatively low-key day (not much to do at work, massage, JOY stageit show, drinks with friends). And I confidently bore my stomach to the world (or the patrons of Southern/Stumble). I might have a picture on my computer that I can post later.
But it’s back to training tonight, followed by rest tomorrow and training again on Saturday. I believe that will complete my sessions, though. :( But I fell in love with spin class, so that will continue. And I can now maneuver the gym on my own so I’ll be more likely to do effective workouts. So we’ll see.
I promise to post specifics about my session tonight. And maybe that birthday picture. :)

Apologies! (3 hours…)
I haven’t blogged in awhile - on this account or my main one - due to my life sort of exploding. Work got super busy, a friend came to visit, I got sick, etc… it’s been a long two weeks. I have been working out/training, just not as much.
I’m back on track this week, though! Trained Saturday, worked out on my own yesterday, took spin tonight, and have a session Thursday evening. Overall, I feel that my endurance is on the rise, as is my strength. I feel my muscles getting stronger and can see them as they become defined. I’m not quite as winded going up the stairs, which was my main goal. And I feel much healthier.
So in about three hours I’ll say hello to my 23rd year on this planet feeling great about my body and my mind. I’m proud of the work I’ve done these past four weeks and proud that I’ve actually kept up the routine (for the most part). I plan on continuing spin classes and working out on my own until I save up a little more money to spend on sessions with Cartier.
But yeah. I hope I can keep contributing to this blog in the future, be it reporting my sessions or whatever. Until then….
:)
